What does graduate school look like to an outsider?

Me: "Mom, would you like to go to school with me today?"

Mother: "I think I'll pass. I feel very restricted there, everyone seems so serious."

Me (slightly surprised by this response): "They are not serious. They are concentrated."

Mother: "Yeah, exactly. I don't want to go to the concentration camp."

On engaging life

To engage in life completely

Never give up. No matter what is going on, never give up. Develop the heart. Too much energy is spent developing the mind instead of the heart. Be compassionate, not just to your friends, but to everyone. Be compassionate. Work for peace in your heart and in the world. Work for peace. And I say again, never give up. No matter what is going on around you. Never give up.
